HOW FAR HAS BOTSWANA GONE WITH VISION 2016

The long term vision 2016 for Botswana began in August 1996 with a nine person presidential task group under the former President  Mr F.G. Mogae's initiatives. The long term vision can be identified with its seven (7) pillars being;
1. An educated and informed nation
2. A prosperous , productive and innovative nation
3. A compassionate , just and caring nation
4. A safe and secure nation
5. An open, democratic and accountable nation
6. A moral and tolerant nation
7. A united and proud nation
The government has attained some of the objectives in different pillars, like in education where quality is the main focus. So far education is compulsory to secondary level, vocational and technical colleges are under the government control to ensure good quality that will market the students world wide. Botswana is trying different ways to diversify the economy from sectors such as mining, industry and agriculture to maintain sustainability, hence prosperous, productive and innovative nation. Both males and females this days have equal opportunities from schools to the job market. The current President, His Excellency Ian Khama is trying by all means to eradicate poverty and empower the poor and illiterate. There has been evidence that the poverty datum line has reduced with a certain percentage, since the implementation of the long term vision. Health sectors has improved with offering better services, the fight against HIV/AIDS shows results that people are aware of the epidemic as most people have enrolled for the ARVs than before. High standards of morality, social attitudes towards people of different cultures and backgrounds is still maintained in Botswana. We see foreigners investing in our country without fear of being reaped off somehow. In terms of politics, Botswana is still maintain Democracy, free and peaceful elections.

However, some of the pillars has not been given much attention like issues of safety and security in our country. High rates of people smuggling drugs and other goods not authorised to enter the country, crime rates have increased, roads accident continue to be part of the challenges faced by the country. There is a lot of corruption taking place in different government sectors and less has been done about it. Unemployment rates has increased drastically, which affect majority of the youth who are said to be the leaders of tomorrow. No measures has been implemented to empower them except internship, which is not monitored and does not guarantee employment. Furthermore, different ethnic groups still feel their languages be introduced in the education system of which is a hustle, yet we are said to be a United proud nation. A lot needs to be done to improve the living standards of Batswana.

In general our government is doing all it can to make sure that each pillar is attained despite the challenges of world recession, climate changes and natural disaster. So far, Botswana has developed much better compared to other African countries and is continuing to persevere. Its achievements are measurable and visible, and there is a lot of room for improvement despite challenges. I strongly believe that with time, all pillars will be fulfilled and we will walk the talk of Vision 2016 Botswana.

  1. The long term plan of Vision 2016 works as a guide that leads to a better Botswana. The problem is that some Batswana are not aware of it espcialy in rural areas, its like it was formulated to benefit those in towns only. Botswana is a multi-lingual society, therefore the issue of different languages introduced in education system should be addressed by 2016.

  2. The Botswana vision 2016 pillars will only be effective if there are to be translated to different languages in Botswana. We have different languages in Botswana there is therefore a great need for people to understand those pillars from their own mother tongue. Setswana and English should not be the only languages of instruction if Batswana really want to accomplish these pillars .

    1. there is a booklet written in Setswana.. and English is an international language i dont see that as a barrier for vision 2016 pillars to be effective.
      NB :An educated and informed nation

  3. All of these are noble, desirable and positive goals. But i dont think they are going to be achieved because firstly, the government is reducing the number of students sponsored in tertiary schools due to economic considerations. Secondly as some become highly educated and rich they tend to look for prostitutes
    offering to pay them extra just to avoid using protection against HIV/ AIDS. It is like events are conspiring to undermine Vision 2016, but these are just examples of chaos and disorder at play.

  4. The long term vision for Botswana has some of its achievements evidential. The main concern is that not all Batswana understand what vision 2016 is and how they can take part in realising this vision. For these pillars to be achieved Batswana, especially those in rural areas should be seriously taught to avoid them remaining behind in this journey. As for the pillar of an educated and informed nation, the pillar will not be easy to be achieved since Botswana is a multi-ligual country, and like I said, involving ALL Batswana will be helpfull.

  6. I’m Артур Борис a resident/citizen of the Republic Of Russian. I’m 42 years of age, an entrepreneur/businessman. I once had difficulties in financing my project/business, if not for a good friend of mine who introduced me to Mr Pedro to get a loan worth $250,000 USD from his company. When I contacted them it took just five working days to get my loan process done and transferred to my account. Even with a bad credit history, they still offer their service to you. They also offer all kinds of loans such as business loans, home loans, personal loans, car loans. I don’t know how to thank them for what they have done for me but God will reward them according to his riches in glory.
